Varanasi

Many people think, that Varanasi is the oldest city of India. Well, thats not true.. Its Delhi (1200 b.c). Varanasi was build 700 b.c. Nevertheless, you really feel and see the old parts of the city, more than Delhi. Almost everything is the same as many years ago, almost no new buildings, except some hotels. Its a very touristic place and you can see many white guys here. Finaly a place where you can feel free from photographers. But also a place, where you have to pay more for ordinary things like fruits or souvenirs. Every medal has two sides ;-)
Varanasi has its name because of the rivers Varana and Asi (two tributaries of the river Ganges) who are forming the city's borders. Main attraction is of corse the big river Ganges. How do you imagine a river, where they burn their dead relatives? Sound like a very dirty river, but it wasn't. It had the colour of our Rhein river near Basel and was absolutely not smelly. But be aware, it has over 2000 times more Kolibacteria in it, than the indian government does allow. So, better you don't take a bath here ;-)
We had a boat tour where we started from our hotel in the south of the city and drove along the Ganges to the north part of the city. It was very intresting to see the city from this angle. We also watched a traditional cremate ceremony. They build a pyre next to the river and place the body inside of it. Then the men stand in a circle around of it and make blessings and sing songs. The women are sitting on the Gath (these are stairs like you can see on picture 5) and are mourning. Then they set the wood on fire and quietly watching. For indians, birth and death is very near and its something normal. As a tourist, you can watch the ceremonies but you have to show respect and don't take any photos.
Varanasi is a interesting place to be. There are many temples, shows, art and very good restaurants. It's also very nice to just walk from Gath to Gath.

Viele Menschen denken, dass Varanasi die älteste Stadt Indiens ist. Nun, das stimmt nicht. Es ist Delhi (1200 v. Chr.). Varanasi wurde im Jahre 700 v. Chr. erbaut. Nichts desto trotz spürt und sieht man hier die alten Teile der Stadt mehr als in Delhi. Fast alles ist noch genau gleich wie vor vielen Jahren, fast keine neuen Gebäude, ausser einigen Hotels. Es ist ein sehr touristischer Ort und man sieht viele weisse hier. Endlich ein Ort wo man sich frei von Fotografen fühlt. Aber auch ein Ort wo man für das gewöhnliche wie Früchte oder Souvenirs mehr bezahlen muss. Jede Medallie hat zwei Seiten ;-)
Varanasi hat seinen Namen wegen den Flüssen Varana und Asi (zwei Nebenflüsse vom Fluss Ganges) welche die Stadtgrenze bilden. Hauptattraktion ist natürlich der grosse Fluss Ganges. Wie stellt ihr euch einen Fluss vor, bei dem man seine verstorbenen Verwandten verbrennt? Klingt nach einem sehr schmutzigen Fluss, war es aber nicht. Er hatte die Farbe vom Rhein in der nähe von Basel und war absolut nicht stinkend. Man beachte, dass er über 2000 mal mehr Kolibakterien enthält, als die indische Regierung zulässt. Also besser hier nicht baden ;-)
Wir hatten eine Bootstour, welche wir bei unserem Hotel im Süden der Stadt starteten, und fuhren dem Ganges entlang nach Norden. Es war sehr interessant die Stadt aus diesem Winkel zu sehen. Wir haben auch an einer traditionellen Kremierungszeremonie zugeschaut. Sie bilden einen Scheiterhaufen neben dem Fluss und legen den Verstorbenen dort hinein. Dann stehen die Männer im Kreis darum und machen Segnungen und singen Lieder. Die Frauen sitzen am Gath (das sind die Treppen die man auf Bild 5 sehen kann) und trauern. Dann zünden sie das Holz an und schauen still zu. Für Inder ist Geburt und Tod sehr nah und es ist etwas ganz normales. Als Tourist kann man bei diesen Zeremonien zuschauen, man muss aber Respekt zeigen und darf keine Fotos machen.
Varanasi ist ein sehr interessanter Ort. Es gibt sehr viele Tempel, Darbietungen, Kunst und sehr gute Restaurants. Es ist auch sehr schön, einfach nur von Gath zu Gath zu spazieren.
