Tips and tricks for Laos

Laos is such a gorgeous country with lots of majestic nature. There are not many tourist, but a lot of backpackers. It has a lot to explore for everyone, no matter young or old. Here are our Tips and tricks for beautiful Laos.

• As Swiss guys we don't needed a Visa for 15 days. You just have to pay 2 to 5 $ tip for the officers. No need to fill out a special form or to bring a photo. They don't even ask, which country you will visit next. They just check your passport out of the deckchair and thats it :-D

• The north of Laos has a lot of mountains and the streets are very curvy. If you travel by bus, make sure you have some travel sickness medicines with you. If you want to get some informations to get from Vietnam to Laos, read my post 'Tips and tricks for Vietnam'

• The people here at Laos don't speak very well english. Except at places like Hotels, Tourist offices or Restaurants you have to talk with hands and feets. But don't worry.. They are soo friendly and they really try to talk with you or make fun with you. We never got cheated or had to pay a very high price for something. They don't see tourists as a goldmine. Not yet.

• Mostly they are buddhist, thats why, there are soo many beautiful temples. Please cover your knees and shoulders, when you enter a temple, to show your respect to the monks and the culture.

• For our trip to Cambodia we also took the bus. Our busstation was at Nadasang, thats where you can go to the 4000 Islands by ferry. I'm sure you can also take a bus from Pakse or somewhere else. Then we drove to the border, gave our busdriver our passports and a filled out form with photo and he did the customs process for us. Little bit strange, but it worked. Then we drove to the capitol city Phnom Penh. It took us about 10 hours.

Laos ist so ein prächtiges Land mit viel majestätischer Natur. Es hat nicht viele Touristen, aber sehr viele Backpacker. Es gibt für alle viel zu entdecken, egal ob jung oder alt. Hier sind unsere Tipps und Tricks für das wunderschöne Laos.

• Als Schweizer brauchten wir für 15 Tage kein Visa. Man muss nur den Offizieren zwischen 2 und 5 Franken Trinkgeld bezahlen. Man muss kein spezielles Formular ausfüllen oder ein Foto mitbringen. Sie fragen nicht einmal, in welches Land man als nächstes reist. Sie kontrollieren nur deinen Pass vom Liegestuhl aus, und das wars :-D

• Im Norden Laos gibt es sehr viele Berge und die Strassen sind sehr kurvig. Nehmt am besten ein Mittel gegen Reisekrankheit mit, falls ihr mit dem Bus reist. Wenn ihr euch darüber  informieren wollt, wie man von Vietnam nach Laos kommt, dann lest meinen Eintrag 'Tips and tricks for Vietnam'

• Die Menschen hier in Laos sprechen nicht sehr gut englisch. Ausser natürlich an Orten wie Hotels, Touristenbüros oder Restaurants muss man sich mit Händen und Füssen verständigen. Aber keine Sorge.. Sie sind soo freundlich und versuchen wirklich mit dir zu reden oder mit dir Spass zu machen. Wir wurden niemals abgezockt oder mussten einen sehr hohen Preis für etwas bezahlen. Sie sehen Touristen nicht als Goldmine. Noch nicht.

• Die meisten sind buddhistisch, darum gibt es hier soo viele schöne Tempel. Bitte bedeckt eure Knie und Schulter wenn ihr einen Tempel betretet, um den Mönchen und ihrer Kultur Respekt zu zeigen.

• Für unsere Reise nach Kambodscha nahmen wir auch den Bus. Unsere Bushaltestelle war in Nadasang, das ist dort, wo man mit der Fähre zu den 4000 Islands fahren kann. Ich bin sicher, man kann auch einen Bus ab Pakse oder von sonst wo nehmen. Dann fuhren wir zur Grenze, gaben dem Busfahrer unsere Pässe und ein ausgefülltes Formular mit Foto und er machte die Zollabwicklung für uns. Ein bisschen komisch, aber es funktionierte. Dann fuhren wir zur Hauptstadt Phnom Penh. Wir hatten etwa 10 Stunden.
