Cancún

Cancun is a very big tourist destination. It's at the carribean sea and it's Mexicos easternmost point. The prices here are literally exploding, because of the many tourists. The beach is so beautiful! White, soft sand, warm, turquoise ocean.. Awesome! We spend one full day at one of the public beaches (Playa Tortugas). It's very difficult to get to those beaches, because there are so many big Hotel Resorts with their private beaches.
The other day we wanted to see the underwater museum but we couldn't get there without booking a tour. The problem is, it's right at one of the privat beaches. In front of every Hotel there are many security guys and they don't let you get through. After asking at three Hotels, we had enough and took the Ferry from Gran Puerto to Isla Mujeres. There were no public buses on the island, only golf carts and Taxis. So we decided to take the Taxi and visited the Turtlefarm Tortugsranja. It was so interesting! They had a place with hundrets of turtle eggs, buried in the sand. The next station was a tank with a lot of baby turtles. They stay there for a few days, before they get in bigger and bigger tanks. In the end, they get in a big outdoor ocean area, and then the staff release them into the wild ocean. This is very important, because there are so many predators and not many baby turtle can grow to a big size in nature. At the end of the day, we went snorkeling at the Playa norte.

Cancun ist eine sehr grosse Touristen Destination. Es liegt am karibischen Meer und ist der östlichste Ort in Mexico. Die Preise hier sind buchstäblich am explodieren weil es so viele Touristen hat. Es ist sooo wundervoll hier. Der Strand ist einfach bildschön! Weisser, feiner Sand, warmes, türkis Meer.. Wahnsinn! Wir verbrachten einen ganzen Tag an einem der öffentlichen Stränden (Playa Tortugas). Es ist sehr schwierig zu diesen Stränden zu gelangen, weil es hier so viele Hotelresorts gibt mit eigenen Privatstränden.
Am nächsten Tag wollten wir das Unterwassermuseum sehen, aber wir konnten nicht hingehen ohne eine Tour zu buchen. Das Problem ist, es ist genau bei einem der privaten Stränden. Vor jedem Hotel hat es viele Sicherheitsmänner und die lassen niemanden durch. Nachdem wir bei drei Hotel gefragt haben, hatten wir genug und nahmen die Fähre von Puerto Grande nach Isla Mujeres. Es gibt keine öffentliche Busse auf der Insel, nur Golfwagen und Taxis. So entschieden wir uns ein Taxi zu nehmen, und besuchten die Schildkrötenfarm Tortugaranja. Es war so interessant! Sie hatten einen Platz mit hunderten Schildkröteneiern welche im Sand vergraben waren. Die nächste Station war ein Becken mit vielen Schildkrötenbabys. Sie bleiben dort für einige Tage, bevor sie in immer grössere Becken kommen. Am Schluss kommen sie in ein grosses Meer Gelände im freien und dann werden sie von den Mitarbeitern in die freie Wildbahn gelassen. Das ist sehr wichtig, weil die Schildkröten sehr viele Raubtiere haben und nicht viele Babyschildkröten in der Natur auf eine grosse Grösse heranwachsen können. Am ende des Tages gingen wir am Playa Norte schnorcheln.

Valladolid + Chichen Itza + Las Coloradas

We choosed Valladolid as our next destination, because it's in the central of two things we need to see. The Chichen Itza pyramid and the pink Lagoon. We stayed at a very simple hotel with a big painting of Frieda Kahlo on it. I think, this is the best looking house of Valladolid :-)
The fist thing we explored was the Cenote Zaci. A cenote is a natural sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone that exposes groundwater underneath. You can find them only here in the Yucatan peninsula, and that's what makes them so special beside their breathtaking beauty. The Cenote Zaci is for Valladolid something like a public pool. Families are meeting here to eat picnic, people are swimming and jumping from the cliffs. It's an oasis in the middle of the city.
Every evening there is a local dance show at the Zocalo. Women are dancing with trays filled with liquor on their head. The food is very delicios. Here you see Pollo Pibil, Poc Chuc (Mostly it's meat, rice and some veggies and fresh made tortillas) and a Torta.
The big highlight for Michael was the great pyramid of Chichen Itza. It's one of the new 7 wonders of the world. In this worldtrip, we already visited two of them. The Taj Mahal, the Great Chinese Wall, and this is number three :-)  Chichen Itza was one of the largest maya cities. Therefore it's one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico. 1.4 million tourists visit the ruins every year! We were there nearly at closing time and there was a storm comming up, but still, there were so many tourists. All the pyramids were blocked off and I think it's because of these crowds. Nevertheless while there were lightning and thunder we had a mystic exploring time at Chichen Itza. The gods were merciful and spared us with rain.
Then we saw my big highlight, the pink lagoon. I absolutely love pink! And now that I saw a pink lagoon, I'm in heaven. Well almost... I finally need to find a real unicorn :-D  We took the bus and drove to the small fishing village Las Coloradas, where we saw the cotton-candy pink lagoon already out of the bus window. There is a huge salt business, and these lagoons are here, to produce the salt. The vibrant pink colour of these lakes is due to red coloured algae, plankton and brine shrimp that thrive in the salty enviroment. We also saw some wild flamingos in the opposite lake. The reason flamingos are pink is because they eat these pink creatures. Normally their feathers are white, however, they change color after eating this stuff. After a stroll through the small village we went to the beach. We are here at the Gulf of Mexico and the water was fabulous turquoise. There were a lot of pelicans and seagulls waiting for the fisherman, to bring them some leftover fishes.


Wir suchten uns Valladolid als unsere nächste Destination aus, weil es in der Mitte von zwei Orten liegt, die wir unbedingt sehen müssen. Die Chichen Itza Pyramiden und die Pinkige Lagune. Wir hatten ein sehr einfaches Hotel mit einem grossen Bild von Frieda Kahlo an der Fassade. Ich finde, das ist das schönste Haus von Valladolid :-)
Das erste was wir hier entdeckten war der Cenote Zaci. Ein Cenote ist ein natürliches Erdloch, welches entsteht, wenn Kalkstein in sich zusammenbricht und Grundwasser von unten heraufkommt. Man kann sie nur hier auf der Yukatan Halbinsel finden und genau das macht sie so speziell nebst ihrer atemberaubender Schönheit. Der Cenote Zaci ist für Valladolid so etwas wie ein öffentliches Freibad. Familien treffen sich hier um miteinander zu Picknicken, Leute schwimmen und springen von den Klippen. Es ist eine Oase mitten in der Stadt.
Jeden Abend gibt es beim Zocalo eine Einheimische Tanzvorstellung. Frauen tanzen mit Tabletts gefüllt mit Schnaps auf ihrem Kopf. Das Essen ist sehr lecker. Hier sieht man Pollo Pibil, Poc Chuc (Meistens Fleisch, Reis und etwas Gemüse mit frisch gemachten Tortillas) und eine Torta.
Das grosse Highlight für Michi war die grosse Pyramide von Chichen Itza. Sie ist eines der 7 neuen Weltwunder. Auf dieser Weltreise haben wir schon zwei davon gesehen. Das Taj Mahal, die Chinesische Mauer und das ist Nummer drei :-)  Chichen Itza war eine der grössten Maya Städte. Darum ist es auch eine der Meist besuchten archäologischen Stätten Mexikos. 1.4 Millionen Touristen besuchen die Ruinen jedes Jahr! Wir waren kurz vor Schluss dort und ein Gewitter war aufgezogen, aber dennoch waren so viele Touristen da. Alle Pyramiden waren abgesperrt und ich glaube es ist wegen diesen Menschenmassen. Nichts desto Trotz während es Blitzte und Donnerte hatten wir eine mystische Entdeckungszeit in Chichen Itza. Die Götter waren gnädig und verschonten uns vom Regen.
Dann sahen wir mein grosses Highlight, die pinkige Lagune. Ich liebe Pink! Und nun da ich eine pinkige Lagune gesehen habe, bin ich im Himmel. Nun ja fast... Ich muss endlich ein echtes Einhorn finden :-D  Wir nahmen den Bus und fuhren zum kleinen Fischerdorf Las Coloradas, wo wir die Zuckerwatte pinkige Lagune bereits vom Busfenster aus sahen. Es hat dort ein grosses Salz Unternehmen und diese Lagunen sind da, um das Salz zu produzieren. Das kräftige Pink dieser Seen entsteht durch die rot gefärbten Algen, Plankton und Salzkrebschen, welche in der salzigen umwelt gedeihen. Wir sahen auch einige wilde Flamingos im See gegenüber. Der Grund warum Flamingos pink sind liegt darin, dass sie diese pinkigen Kreaturen essen. Normalerweise haben sie weisse Federn, jedoch wechseln sie ihre Farbe nachdem sie diese Dinge gegessen haben. Nach einem  Spaziergang durch das kleine Dorf gingen wir zum Strand. Wir sind hier am Golf von Mexiko und das Wasser ist fabelhaft türkis. Es hatte sehr viele Pelikane und Seemöven welche auf die Fischer warteten, die ihnen etwas Fischresten bringen.

Merida + Uxmal

Merida is the capital and largest city of the state Yucatan as well as the largest city of the Yucatan peninsula. We stayed for a whole week there, because Michael had to work a lot and communicate to Switzerland and Germany. (He earned 5'000 $ within 2 days because he invested in Platincoin. Unbelievable!!  Click here if you also want to join us or learn more) So while Europe was sleeping, we had a lot of fun exploring the city.
We made a city tour on our own and visited the Placa Grande, the government building, the Santa Lucia Park, the University, the Hidalgo Park and some nice souvenir shops.
On tuesday, Michael got this very cool Maya Tattoo. These are real mayan hieroglyps that spell: First King in the year 17 (2017), on his journey with spirit of the jaguar and the snake, protected with the shield. The next day we went to the fruit and vegetable market Lucas de Galvez. It was very nice and colourful. We learned how they make the tortillas and we saw some freaky bugs with jewelery on it. Crazy world..
Then on thursday we visited the Uxmal (you say Ushmal) pyramids. Uxmal means 'what is to come, the future'. A mayan story says, that Uxmal supposed to me an invisible city, build in one night by the magic of the dwarf king. It was in fact very magical. All the buildings are in extremly good condition. For the first time we saw the full ballcourt for the mesoamerican ballgame (Picture 23). The rules of the game are unknown, but they know, that the ball has to be passed through the round stone ring and the captain of the winner team can decide if the captain of the loser team should die or stay alive. There are ancient roads, also build by the mayans, that connect Uxmal with the Pyramid of Chichen Itza (Mexico), Caracol, Xunantunich (Belize) and Tikal (Guatemala). That's a pretty big distance!
On friday we visited the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. We saw and touched the meteorites that killed the dinosaurs million years ago. We also learned more about the ancient and now a days maya culture. On the map of the Yucatan peninsula you see all the maya sites. There are soo many! On our way back to the Hotel, we saw the Paseo de Montejo memorial and enjoyed an orchester next to the Catedral San Ildefonso.


Merida ist die Hauptstadt und auch die grösste Stadt vom Bezirk Yukatan, sowie auch die grösste Stadt der Yukatan Halbinsel. Wir blieben eine ganze Woche dort, weil Michi viel arbeiten und mit der Schweiz und Deutschland kommunizieren musste. (Er verdiente CHF 5'000 innerhalb von 2 Tagen, weil er in Platincoins investierte. Unglaublich!! Klickt hier wenn ihr auch mitmachen oder mehr erfahren wollt) Während also Europa am schlafen war, hatten wir viel Spass die Stadt zu entdecken.
Wir machten einen Stadtrundgang und schauten uns den Placa Grande, das Rathaus, den Santa Lucia Park, die Universität, den Hidalgo Park und einige nette Souvenir Läden an.
Am Dienstag bekam Michi ein richtig cooles Maya Tattoo. Das sind richtige Maya Hieroglyphen und bedeuten: Erster König im Jahre 17 (2017), auf seiner Reise mit dem Geist des Jaguars und der Schlange, geschützt vom Schild. Am nächsten Tag ging es zum Lucas de Galvez Früchte- und Gemüsemarkt. Er war sehr schön und bunt. Wir lernten wie sie die Tortillas machen und wir sahen einige komische Käfer mit Schmuck am Rücken. Verrückte Welt..
Dann besuchten wir am Donnerstag die Uxmal (man sagt Uschmal) Pyramiden. Uxmal bedeutet: 'was wird kommen, die Zukunft'. Eine Maya Geschichte besagt, das Uxmal eine unsichtbare Stadt ist, welche in einer Nacht durch die Magie des Zwergenkönigs erbaut worden sein soll. Es war tatsächlich sehr magisch. Alle Gebäude sind in einem extrem guten Zustand. Zum ersten Mal sahen wir den ganzen Spielplatz des Mesoamerikanischen Ballspiels (Bild 23). Die Regeln des Spiels sind nicht bekannt, aber man weiss, dass der Ball durch den steinernen Ring gespielt werden muss und dass der Kapitän des Gewinnerteams entscheiden darf, ob der Kapitän des Verliererteams sterben oder leben soll. Es gibt alte Strassen, auch von den Mayas gebaut, die Uxmal mit den Pyramiden von Chichen Itza (Mexiko), Caracol, Xunantunich (Belize) und Tikal (Guatemala) verbinden. Das ist eine ziemlich grosse Distanz!
Am Freitag besuchten wir das Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. Wir sahen und berührten die Meteoriten welche vor Millionen Jahren die Dinosaurier töteten. Wir lernten auch mehr über die alte und heutige Mayakultur. Auf der Karte der Yukatanhalbinsel sieht man alle Maya Stätten. Es sind soo viele! Auf unserem Weg zurück zum Hotel sahen wir noch das Paseo de Montejo Denkmal und genossen ein Orchester neben der Catedral San Ildefonso.
