Palenque

With Palenque we enter the first Maya city in our trip through Mexico. So first of all, we wanted to see this mysterious town. The Mayans were from approx. 400 A.D. to 800 A.D at Palenque. As we arrived at the Zona Arqueologica we booked a private jungle tour with Victor. For 1,5 hours he was our guide and led us through the thicket of the jungle. Every 50 m there was a Maya pyramid underneath the wood, moss and bushes. They don't dig them free, because they don't want to destroy the jungle and they have no money to do it. I'ts only a small path that leads from pyramid to pyramid. During this tour, we saw far more than just the pyramids. We saw some wild cocoa, Mahogany, the Mayas holy Ceiba tree, a lot of lianas and spiny trees, from which the mexicans eat the fruits. Michael walked through a canal build from the Mayans. He said, it was full with bats and glowworms.
After the guided tour we explored the temples by our own. They were giant and beautiful. An architectural masterpiece. Inside the Templo de Calavera they found the Red Queen. She must have been in a high position, because she was buried with a lot of tomb treasures and jade jewelery. Very interesting is, that archaeologists found a stone with an astronaut and a spaceship on it. How did the mayans knew about such things? Coincidence? For us, this sound very extraterrestrial! Klick here for more informations. It's very thrilling. After the pyramids we saw the beautiful Murcielago waterfall and the pretty blue water holes. Then we went to the museum and saw some of the original stones with handmade carvings. They are in a fabulous condition, although they are so old.
The inhabited city of Palenque is very nice, but not as sweet as my favourite Puebla ;-) The streets are also dreamy and buisy at the same time and there are a lot of churches.

Mit Palenque betreten wir nun die erste Maya Stadt auf unserer Reise durch Mexiko. Also wollten wir erst einmal diese geheimnisvolle Stadt anschauen. Die Mayas waren von ca. 400 - 800 n. Chr. in Palenque. Als wir in der Zona Arqueologica ankamen, buchten wir zuerst eine private Dschungeltour bei Victor. Während 1.5 Stunden war er unser Führer und leitete uns durch das Dickicht des Dschungels. Alle 50 m war eine Maya Pyramide unter dem Holz, Moos und den Büschen. Sie graben diese nicht aus, weil sie den Dschungel nicht zerstören wollen und weil ihnen das Geld dazu fehlt. Es führt lediglich ein schmaler Pfad von Pyramide zu Pyramide. Während dieser Tour sahen wir weit mehr als nur die Pyramiden. Wir sahen wilde Kakaobohnen, Mahagoni, der heilige Ceiba Baum der Mayas, sehr viele Lianen und stachelige Bäume, von welchen die Mexikaner die Früchte essen. Michi lief durch einen Kanal, welchen die Mayas gebaut haben. Er sagte, es war voll mit Fledermäusen und Glühwürmchen. Nach der geführten Tour, erkundeten wir die Tempel dann alleine. Sie waren riesig und wunderschön. Ein architektonisches Meisterwerk. Im innern des Templo de Calavera fanden sie die Rote Königin. Sie muss wohl in einer hohen Position gewesen sein, weil sie mit sehr vielen Grabschätzen und Jadeschmuck begraben wurde. Sehr interessant ist, dass Archäologen einen Stein gefunden haben, welcher einen Astronauten und ein Raumschiff zeigt. Wie konnten die Mayas solche Dinge gekannt haben? Zufall? Für uns klingt das sehr ausserirdisch! Klick hier für mehr Informationen darüber. Es ist mega spannend. Nach den Pyramiden sahen wir den wunderschönen Murcielago Wasserfall und die hübschen blauen Wasserlöcher. Dann gingen wir zum Museum und sahen einige der originalen Steine mit handgemachten Schnitzereien. Sie sind in einem fabelhaften Zustand, obwohl sie so alt sind.
Die bewohnte Stadt von Palenque ist sehr schön, aber nicht so süss wie meine lieblings Stadt Puebla ;-) Die Strassen sind auch verträumt und geschäftigt zur gleichen Zeit und es gibt sehr viele Kirchen.
