Oaxaca + Monte Alban

Oaxaca is located inbetween the hills of Sierra Madre. It's 1550 m above the sealevel, so it's not quite summer temerature up here. But with 20 to 25 degree celcius we are very happy though :-)
Like Puebla, there is also a big Santo Domingo church at Oaxaca. It was also excessively decorated  with gold and frills, but very nice to look at. Next to the church was the museum of culture where we learned a lot about the culture of the Zapotecs, the Aztecs and later the spanish colonials that came to this place. The Zocalo is the heart of every mexican city. There are a lot of markets on the street, where they sell everything from spices, jewelery, clothes, balloons and toys. During July there is the 'Guelaguetza' Festival. People are dancing in costumes and there are parades complete with indigenous walking bands. Although the celebration is now a tourist attraction, it also has a deep cultural importance for the peoples of Oaxaca. The indigenous people in Oaxaca are from many different cultures. Zapotec and Mixtec are the two biggest ethnic groups.
With all these cultural informations we went to the Monte Alban Pyramids. We had an incredibly sunny day and enjoyed the view over the city and the Sierra Madre hills. These ruins and pyramids are also build  in the 8th century B.C. by the Zapotecs and were later taken over by the Mixtecs and then by the Aztecs. Monte Alban is one of the oldest cities of Mesoamerica.
On saturday we celebrated our first wedding day. Unbelievable how fast time goes by.. We had a romantic lunch at the best restaurant in town. It was very delicious! After that I had an appointment for a tattoo. I know.. thats not how you usually imagine an anniversary, but he could only give me this appointment. He worked for almost 6 hours and it's still not finished. It's huge and all over my whole upper leg. But he will finish it sometime, when he will come to Switzerland or Germany. I can't wait to fill it up with all the colours :-D


Oaxaca liegt zwischen den Hügeln von Sierra Madre. Es ist 1550 m über Meer, also sind es nicht gerade sommerliche Temperaturen hier oben. Aber mit 20 bis 25 Grad sind wir dennoch glücklich :-)
Wie in Puebla gibt es auch hier in Oaxaca eine grosse Santo Domingo Kirche. Auch diese ist übertrieben mit Gold und Schnörkel verziert, aber sehr schon anzuschauen. Neben der Kirche war das Kulturmuseum, wo wir sehr viel über die Kultur der Zapoteken, der Azteken und später über die spanischen Kolonien lernten, welche an diesen Ort kamen. Der Zocalo ist das Herz jeder mexikanischen Stadt. Es gibt sehr viele Märkte auf den Strassen, wo von Gewürzen, Schmuck, Kleider, Balloone bis hin zu Spielzeug alles verkauft wird. Während dem Juli ist hier das 'Guelaguetza' Festival. Menschen tanzen in Kostümen und es gibt Paraden mit einheimischen Marschkapellen. Obwohl das Fest nun eine Touristenattraktion ist, hat es doch eine sehr tiefe kulturelle Wichtigkeit für die Menschen von Oaxaca. Die Einheimischen in Oaxaca sind von vielen verschiedenen Kulturen. Zapoteken und Mixteken sind die zwei grössten ethnischen Gruppen.
Mit all diesen kulturellen Informationen gingen wir zu den Monte Alban Pyramiden. Wir hatten einen erstaunlich sonnigen Tag und genossen die Aussicht über die Stadt und die Sierra Madre Hügel. Diese Ruinen und Pyramiden wurden auch im 8. Jahrhundert v. Chr. von den Zapoteken erbaut und später von den Mixteken und dann von den Azteken übernommen. Monte Alban ist eine der ältesten Städte Mesoamerikas.
Am Samstag feierten wir unseren ersten Hochzeitstag. Unglaublich wie schnell die Zeit vergeht.. Wir hatten ein romantisches Mittagessen im besten Restaurant der Stadt. Es war sehr lecker! Danach hatte ich einen Termin zum Tattoowieren. Ich weiss... so stellt man sich gewöhnlich keinen Jahrestag vor, aber er konnte mir nur diesen Termin geben. Er arbeitete fast 6 Stunden daran und es ist immernoch nicht fertig. Es ist riesig und über meinen ganzen Oberschenkel. Aber wir werden es irgendwann fertig machen, wenn er nach Deutschland oder in die Schweiz kommt. Ich kann es kaum erwarten alles mit Farben zu füllen :-D
