Tips and tricks for Guatemala

Guatemala is a very interesting country with a lot of cool things to do. Here are some things you have to know, before you start your travel.

• In every central american country is criminality a big question. We read a lot of bad things about Guatemala. Especially from the website of our government. Geez this was shocking.. But I think they have to write about all these things, even if it happened to just one person. We got some more informations from travel blogs and they all told us the same: It's save as long as you follow the safety rules. Don't go out at night, respect the local people and traditions, don't carry a lot of money with you, never walk through lonely, dark side alleys. Keep in mind, that Guatemala City is very dangerous. We didn't visit it, because it isn't beautiful anyway. 

• For our long distance travel we took a sleeping bus, because they are very comfortable and safe. There are some people that will tell you, that some bad guys will block the road and rob the whole bus. Well yes, this happens some times, but mostly it's very safe on the streets. For short distances we took the Chicken-Bus. These are old schoolbuses from the US. The driver drive like crazy but you will get from A to B for a cheap price and meet a lot of nice locals. At Guatemala-City we recommend to take a taxi, no matter how short the distance is. It's for your safety.

• Guatemala is famous for some really impressing volcanos. There are a lot of tours you can book to visit them. If you are lucky, you can see an erruption, which is the coolest thing ever, isn't it?

• Visit the big Atitlan lake. The landscape is so beautiful. Ask directly the Captain of the boat about the ferry price. It's mostly half of the price the tourist agencies will offer it to you. Anyway, befor you take a taxi, bus or book a tour, ask a local how much it will cost. You will have an idea how much you have to spend, because they tell you a hudge price every time. You can bargain every price. Tell them how much the locals pay and they will give you an appropriate price.

Guatemala ist ein sehr interessantes Land mit vielen coolen Sachen die man unternehmen kann. Hier sind einige Dinge die ihr wissen müsst, bevor ihr eure Reise startet.

•  In jedem Zentralamerikanischen Land ist Kriminalität eine grosse Frage. Wir lasen viel schlechtes über Guatemala. Vorallem auf der Website unserer Regierung. Meine Güte war das schockierend.. Aber ich denke, die müssen das alles so schreiben, selbst wenn es nur einer Person passierte. Wir beschafften uns mehr Informationen von Travelblogs und die sagten uns alle das gleiche: Es ist sicher,  solange man sich an die Sicherheitsregeln hält. Geht nicht Nachts nach draussen, respektiere die einheimischen Menschen und ihre Traditionen, trage nicht viel Geld mit dir mit, laufe nie durch einsame dunkle Seitengassen. Denkt daran, Guatemala-Stadt ist sehr gefährlich. Wir haben diese Stadt nicht besucht, da sie sowieso nicht so schön ist.

• Für unsere Langstreckenreise benutzten wir einen Nachtbus, weil diese sehr bequem und sicher sind. Es gibt einige Leute die euch sagen werden, dass einige böse Jungs die Strasse blockieren werden und den ganzen Bus ausrauben. Nun ja, dass kann schon mal passieren, aber in der Regel ist es sehr sicher auf den Strassen. Für kurze Strecken nahmen wir den Chicken-Bus. Das sind alte Schulbusse von den Vereinigten Staaten. Der Fahrer fährt zwar wie ein Verrückter, aber man kommt günstig von A nach B und lernt viele nette Einheimische kennen. In Guatemala-Stadt empfehlen wir ein Taxi  zu nehmen, egal wie kurz die Strecke auch ist. Es ist für eure Sicherheit.

• Guatemala ist bekannt für einige sehr beeidruckende Vulkane. Es gibt sehr viele Touren die ihr buchen könnt um euch alles anzuschauen. Wenn ihr Glück habt, könnt ihr einen Ausbruch sehen, was doch das coolste überhaupt ist, oder?

• Schaut euch den grossen Atatlan See an. Die Landschaft ist so wunderschön. Fragt direkt beim Kapitän nach dem Fährenpreis. Es ist meistens die Hälfte vom Preis, welcher die Touristenagenturen euch offerieren. So oder so, bevor ihr ein Taxi oder Bus nehmt oder eine Tour bucht, fragt einen Einheimischen nach dem Preis. So habt ihr eine Ahnung wie viel ihr bezahlen müsst, weil sie euch jedes mal riesige Preise sagen werden. Man kann jeden Preis verhandeln. Sagt ihnen einfach wieviel ein Einheimischer bezahlen würde und sie geben euch einen angemessenen Preis.
